April Sale Report- a successful sale to put a spring in our step

Posted in: News on April 25, 2017.

The sun shone down on Maidenhead last Saturday, bringing in the crowds from eight thirty to view some six hundred lots in our April sale.

The auction certainly started off on very strong footing. Lot 2, a Victorian mahogany Wellington chest made £1600. Soon after, an elegant Henry Deykin longcase clock sold for £1000. And the success of the April sale continued from there.

The shining stars of this sale can be found in the jewellery department. A stunning platinum and five stone diamond ring sold for £2200, closely followed by an 18 carat yellow gold, diamond and tanzanite pendant for £2000. A gorgeous bright cut yellow gold fringe necklace with matching earrings sold for £1100 and a pair of white gold solitaire diamond ear studs set with round brilliant cut diamonds for £950. Watches sold well, with an 18 carat white gold Corum ‘Rolls Royce’ going for £1800. Following this came an Omega Seamaster Professional automatic chronograph watch for £1000.

We all fell in love with Dominique Alonzo’s gilt bronze and ivory figure The Jewel Box, a delicate model of a woman dressed in medieval costume, seated on an onyx balustrade and opening a jewellery box. And we certainly weren’t the only ones, as she sold for £1800.

British artists did themselves proud in this sale. A Gill Watkiss street scene went for £1700, with The Staircase, a lovely depiction of a sun-drenched hall by Frederick William Elwell selling for £1600. Also of note is the 17th century Italian School Cupid Carving his Bow, selling for £1400.

Our militaria department garnered much pre-sale interest, with the top seller being an ornate Middle Eastern Jamiya dagger selling for £1600. Two Japanese katanas sold above estimate at £700 and £400.  Two of our WWII items also did very well. A Second Reich Kriegsmarine Auxilliary Cruiser badge flew at £1000, and a Third Reich helmet also did well at £320.

On the silver front, the huge Edwardian oval silver tray by Charles Boyton & Sons decorated with a scrolling border and embossed shells sold for £1250. This high price was closely followed by an Elizabeth I Provincial silver Salisbury seal top spoon for £1000. Ceramics also did very well, with a pair of 18th century Sevres French jardinieres together with a Sevres plate making a top price of £1900.
