Collectable Star Wars toys prove The Force is strong

The Force was with Dawson’s Auctioneers in our October 27th sale as a local surprise find of highly collectable Star Wars figures and accessories fetched a total of over £4,000.
Consigned from a local owner, who had worked on the original Star Wars Trilogy at Elstree, the selection spanned 15 lots and highlights included £1,200 reached for a complete 1983 Kenner Return of the Jedi C-3PO Collector’s case and £550 for a 1977 Darth Vader Tie Fighter, sold alongside another Tie Fighter. These impressive results reflect strength in an emerging market as younger generations of collectors compete to own rare early editions of figures where originality and condition are of paramount importance. The selection that featured in our October sale ticked these boxes perfectly as they had been carefully stored by one original owner since their purchase some 40 years ago.
It is reassuring to see the strength and determination in the highly knowledgeable buyers that compete for such collectables – perhaps we are seeing Star Wars and similar collectables overtake the once secure footing that the likes of Staffordshire figures once enjoyed in the auction house and in the public’s popularity?
“It was a treat for me to collect, research and catalogue these items”
With an unmistakable air of nostalgia, these figures often transport collectors back to the simpler joys of childhood – coupled by the rather more grown up joys of the pursuit of a complete collection and the art in its curation, display and appreciation. It is this enjoyment that leaves collectors willing to travel across the breadth of the nation to view and purchase desired pieces and models – personified in the large number of visitors we welcomed during the auction day and pre-sale viewing – perhaps not from a galaxy far far away, but certainly from the four corners of the UK with matched interest from online bidders spanning almost every continent!
Auctioneer & Valuer Peter Mason, who catalogued and undertook selling the collection comments: “It was a treat for me to collect, research and catalogue these items; as a child of the late seventies and early eighties, these toys were very much of my era and it was a joy to re-live some of that nostalgia in the name of work! I was especially delighted for the vendor, who was himself surprised and thrilled by the results, having had no idea that his collection would be so desirable. The rarity of some of the items, coupled with their immaculate condition, ensured the great results at auction.”
We auction all types of toys including Dinky / Corgi / Hornby trains and much more. For further information contact Peter Mason on 01628 944 100 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Read more about How to Sell at Dawson’s.
