A mid-19th century boxwood and ebony Staunton chess set, circa 1855-60, the white king stamped 'Jaques London' to foot, red crown stamps to one knight and one rook on each side, height of king approx 8.9 cm, with weighted bases, contained in a 19th century Gothic Revival carton-pierre / papier-mache casket, with a velvet-lined interior, the base with a yellow Jaques label, numbered '2902', 10 cm high x 21 cm x 15.5 cm.

Condition Report

Hinge to box lid broken (not unusually), general wear and warping commensurate with age. Chip and missing collar to black king and two black pawns and a small missing element to back of a white knight's ear. Felt base missing to one white pawn.
