Each day can be so different to the last, and whilst we simply never know what may be brought to the attention of our team of experts for valuation, we also can be surprised by who may be asking us to look at those valuables! There are many extremely well-known people who currently live in, or who have lived in Hampstead.
Amongst the more recognisable names of people who were born in Hampstead are politician Nigel Lawson, racing driver Damon Hill, actors Stephen Fry and Dirk Bogarde, novelist Evelyn Waugh, and the English educator and administrator Robert Laurie Morant. Whilst, as many readers will no doubt be aware, there are also many famous people who own property in the Hampstead area, including amongst others; Harry Styles and Boy George from the Pop World, James Corden the much loved TV presenter, and Ricky Gervais the comedian, actor and writer.
To make our Valuers’ lives a little more exciting, we do from time to time get an opportunity to value items that are currently, or were previously owned by people of world repute…
One such example relates to a collection of antique drinking glasses that Dawsons are selling within our July Auction. This beautiful collection belonged to the late Professor Jonathan Brostoff, MA, DM, DSc(Med), FRCP, FRCPath, FIBiol. As Professor of Allergy and Environmental Health, Professor Brostoff remains world renowned for his expertise, textbooks and publications on allergy and clinical immunology, anaphylaxis, food allergy and intolerance, and auto-immune disorders.
A local resident of Hampstead for many years, Dawsons were ideally placed to assist the family with this collection. Talking ahead of the sale, our Auctioneer and Valuer Harrison Goldman said, ‘We are delighted to bring this passionate collection of drinking glasses to the market. These were collected over decades and took pride of place in the professor’s study. With estimates starting from less than £100 there is something for everyone in this collection sale.’
Whilst the bulk of the collection derive from the 18th and 19th century, there are also some interesting 20th century pieces, as well as some affordable group lots which are very much useable today in the 21st century and sure to set your table setting apart from the rest!
