March Sale Report- another roaring success
Posted in: News on March 28, 2017.
Dawson’s Auctioneers third sale on the 25th of March was another roaring success. Once again the saleroom was busy from 8:30 am (on a Saturday, which says a lot!) with much online and telephone interest during the days preceding. Of particular note amongst the some 600 lots were the silver, Asian art, and painting departments, all three making up the majority of the twenty five top hammer prices.
A beautiful James II silver tazza was keenly contested, going for £2700, closely followed by a George II silver cruet set by Samuel Wood for £2400. A George II silver chocolate/coffee pot by Paul Crispin and a George III silver cake basket both sold for £900. We never knew how much we needed a cake basket till this came into the sale. Who wants to consign the next one?
On the fine art front, an unusual Mary Feddon oil on canvas of a vase of flowers garnered much pre-sale interest, and, with a flurry of telephone, commission and online bids, sold for £1900. A number of 18th and 19th ancestral portraits were also very successful, selling well above their estimates with a 19th century French School pair in oval frames going for £1600. Lots of new additions to the Maidenhead family tree!
Our April sale also evidenced the hugely thriving Asian art market. A note to all of you who have that unloved Chinese vase on your shelf, consignment for our April auction is open till the 7th April…! A wonderful bound folio of 19th century multi-figure watercolours on rice paper sold for £1450. Ceramic-wise, a collection of Chinese tea bowls sold for £900, along with a dragon-handled ornately decorated Chinese vase for the same price. Another top selling ceramic was a small L.E.F. Bodart Delft glazed ceramic vase, selling for £2000.
The ever popular George Jensen did well in the sale. Gold and diamonds also flew out of the room making space for a very high quality number of items to come in the next sale- our jewellery department is very excited, watch this space!
