A rare signed 1950’s Decca Record’s Visitor book is sold for Charity

A rare Decca Records visitors book featuring the autographs of many famous people has recently sold at auction at Dawson’s in Maidenhead.

The Decca Record’s visitors book contained signatures of numerous prominent people including, the Duke of Edinburgh signed in 1957, Prince Edward, Princess Margaret and her children (Sarah Armstrong, Jones and ‘Linley’), Ted Health, Richard Attenborough, Lord Huntingdon, Gerald Lascelles, Val Doonican, Engelbert Humperdinck, The Batchelors, The Applejacks and numerous other musicians and politicians.

It was discovered in the 1970’s by a Maidenhead resident who worked with Decca, and during an office closure, found the book lying on top of a skip about to be disposed of. Astonished by the several signatures of note, he decided to save it and take it with him. Yet, after almost fifty years of having it in his possession he decided it was time to figure out its’ next move. Always believing the book was never his to keep, he concluded on selling it and giving all the proceeds to a local charity.

He took the book to Dawson’s in Maidenhead, and we offered to sell it without any charges, meaning that 100% of the sale price would go to the charity of his choice, commission free. The book went on to sell in May for £1,000, all of which was donated to the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice in Maidenhead.

The vendor chose the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice after hearing on the radio that they had recently opened after years of fundraising; and he was keen to support a smaller charity. Claire Coldicott, Director of Fundraising and Communications at Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service said:

“We are delighted to receive the generous donation of £1,000 from the proceeds of the sale of a Decca Records Visitors Book full of the names of well-known celebrities – such an interesting and nostalgic auction item. This will enable us to provide at least 25 hours of care for the amazing families we support either at our purpose built children’s hospice in Maidenhead or in our families own homes across Berkshire and the surrounding areas.”

Here at Dawson’s we are elated to help support a local charity. For more information or to get a free auction valuation on your item contact us today on 01628 944100.
