September Sale Report

Posted in: News on October 3, 2017.

September always heralds the start of a new season in the auction world, with lots of new and exciting items coming onto the market and achieving wonderful results. Dawson’s Fine Art & Antiques auction on September 23rd was no exception. Following the success of the August sale, we were proud to present a marvellous selection of antiques, paintings, and more. The jewellery notably did very well with great results across the board, including a double estimate £5,000* for a beautiful 19th century diamond bow brooch, and £7,600* for a four carat solitaire diamond ring. An interesting historical piece was a charming gold and turquoise ring by Liberty & Co., mostly likely designed by Archibald Knox, which soared past its estimate after lots of pre-sale interest to make £1,600* on the day.

In the Asian art section, a large and beautiful Japanese Satsuma vase attracted lots of interest, with the hammer finally dropping at £3,200*.

A William III / Queen Anne transitional silver tazza made £1,800*, showing that the collectors market for unusual antique silver is still going strong.

There were some star lots in our ever-expanding painting department which generated plenty of interest, including a watercolour by Rowland Langmaid, who was a pupil of William Wyllie. His beautifully evocative scene of ships sailing at Greenwich Reach realised a price of £1,150*, whilst a charming oil on board of Mount Snowdon by much-admired Welsh artist Charles Wyatt Warren achieved £1,000*.

A small private collection of militaria garnered a great deal of enthusiastic attention, one of the finest lots being a 19th century Indian Talwar curved sword with a beautifully gilded handle, which after heated bidding resulted in a price of £2,600*.

The Dawson’s valuations team were excited to have handled so many beautiful items this month, and are already well into cataloguing their autumn and winter sales. Please contact one of our specialists to find out how to get a complimentary valuation and consign your item to auction.
