Strong Start to Inaugural Auction

Dawson’s Fine Art & Antiques Sale on the 21st of January saw an auspicious start for the brand new auction house. Having only opened in December of 2016, Dawson’s has already garnered a huge amount of interest, with clients putting in over four hundred high quality and unusual lots in this inaugural sale. More than a hundred people were present on the day, filling the large saleroom, with an additional two hundred and fifty people attending the viewing days on Thursday and Friday, and the late night viewing on Friday evening.
There were a number of commission and telephone bids made and three hundred online bidders from around the world participating via both the Saleroom and Invaluable websites.
‘piqued the interest of buyers worldwide’
The top price was £4,960 for a pair of George III silver entrée dishes by Paul Storr, closely followed by an exquisite white gold and diamond ring, with an inclusive price of £3,960. Porcelain also did very well, the top price being £3,600 for a rare eighteenth century Meissen model of a Russian fish seller. A beautiful Liberty & Co. pewter mantel clock selling for £1,050 reflected the success of clocks in the sale, all but one going on the day. In art, two small landscapes by Benjamin Williams Leader paved the way, making £1,360. It is also worth mentioning the sale of the anonymous Gypsy Girl, whose determined expression piqued the interest of buyers worldwide, eventually selling for £990.
The most notable sale of the day, and certainly the most unexpected, was an early twentieth century Chinese telescopic handle with an amber coloured handle, exceeding expectations astronomically at £2,000, certainly reflecting the ever rising popularity of Asian art and antiques.
Dawson’s will hold an antiques and collectable sale once a month, and six specialist auctions a year. They are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am until 5pm for drop in valuations, otherwise by appointment. The next sale of Fine Art & Antiques will be on Saturday 25th of February at 10am. Viewings will be held on the Thursday and Friday prior. For more information please contact us. Entries are currently being accepted for all sales.
