Hermann Schmiechen (1855-1925) German 'Mary Hamilton'
depicting a half portrait of the famous 16th century lady, rumored to have been one of Mary Queen of Scots' attendant as per the well known tragic Scottish ballad, here she is depicted wearing a lace trimmed bonnet and a high ruffle collar with a jewelled gold parure, signed lower right 'H. Schmiechen', oil on canvas, the reverse titled and stamped with the canvas makers' company in London, and the stretcher stamped with collector's number 'O&C 352', 58 cm x 43 cm.
