A 1930s British Bestlite BL1 table or desk lamp, designed by Richard Dudley Best in 1931, the slightly domed base finished in red and weighted with a cast iron disc stamped 'MADE IN ENGLAND', with vertical tubular support leading to a curved tubular support on an adjustable mount, with curving shade finished in matching red, wear to painted and chrome finish, 51-84cm high. Best's much-loved design references the Bauhaus, which celebrates its centenary this year. This model was favoured by Winston Churchill, who not only used it on his desk in Whitehall, but also took it with him as he travelled the world.
