Lot 328

A cased London-made Colt 1851 Navy pattern single action . 36 calibre percussion revolver, serial number. 10824, the barrel marked "Address Col, Colt London" the fitted and baised case bearing a Downs of London trade plaque and a possible reproduction "Loading Colt's Pistols" paper instruction label, the mahogany case containing, bullet mould, nipple tool, primer cap tin and later cleaning brush, Length of pistol 33 cm, size of case 39.6 cm x 18.6 cm x 7 cm deep.

Samuel Colt whilst exhibiting at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, was staggered by the level of European interest in his affordable mass-produced firearms, such was the demand that he later established a factory in Pimlico near Vauxhall Bridge in London. The manufacture ran from 1853 to 1856 and so its production was limited, although it is thought that 37,000 Colt Navy pistols were produced at this location.

Condition Report

The frame numbers all correspond, and the single action cocks to both positions and this indexes the cylinder as expected.

The grips seems to be original as they have shrunken away from the frame.

The surface of the cylinder, frame, barrel and hammer show some historic pitting from usage.

The fore end of the pistol shows a little play where it joins the cylinder frame, this is minimal and due to use and wear and tare.

The pistol came from a retired military man who collected London-made Colt pistols that we have sold previously.

No safety guarantee is made or inferred regarding the status of proof of this pistol.
