Lot 161 - A very rare group of mid-1970s American George...

A very rare group of mid-1970s American George Maciunas for Fluxus wallpaper samples produced c1974 and comprising a quantity of silkscreen on paper sheets with various designs in different bright colours including a stylised profile of Nefertiti, a Marilyn Monroe montage executed in the style of Andy Warhol, teddy bears holding balloons, a cartoon style Charlie Chaplin, and various geometric patterns including L-shapes, curves and diagonal lines, some with printed titles verso, with punched small holes to one side and some bound together with string, contained in a black card box and together with a copy of 'Mr Fluxus: A collective portrait of George Maciunas (1931-1978)' edited by Emmett Williams and Ann Noël, published by Thames and Hudson in 1997. Various sizes, largest sheets 50cm square. Originally called Neo-Dada, Fluxus (active 1960s-80s) aimed to destroy the boundaries between art and life by bringing together all aspects of contemporary culture into an avant garde movement. Influenced partly by the music of John Cage, they deemed the process of creation as being as, or more, important than the actual creation of an object. Here 'art' is transferred to domestic wallpaper, with the owner being directly involved in the creation of their own 'unique' artwork in their own space through the choice and placement of the panels of paper. The variety of different patterns and colours, and presence of a promotional photograph of the sheets used in a room glued to the back of one sheet, suggests that this was a salesman's sample box.

Sold for £220
