Unknown, probably French, early to mid 20th century an abstract and geometric figurative oil on canvas, comprised of thickly painted circles and lines, possibly depicting Don Quixote, with a partial stylised face on the left, and donkey or other animal on the right, unsigned, with original period frame, frame 67cm high, 52.5cm wide. This high quality unsigned abstract work, acquired in Paris in the 1950s, bears some similarities to work produced by members of the Cercle et Carré group, which was founded in Paris in 1929 and absorbed into the Abstraction-Création group in 1931. Artists who were members of, exhibited with, or contributed to, this group included Le Corbusier, Amedée Ozenfant, Fernand Léger, Marcelle Cahn, Alexander Exter/Ekster, Jean Hélion and Auguste Herbin. The work of Danish artist Franciska Clausen is also potentially comparable.
