Israel Leibo (1912-1987) Estonian 'Abduction in the village', an oil on board, depicting a man and a bull in acolourful abstract village scene, painted in the style of Marc Chagall, probably signed 'Leibo' under the frame, the back with handwritten paper label reading 'BY ISRAEL LEIBO (1973) 'ABDUCTION IN THE VILLAGE £750...', framed, 71cm wide, 51cm high. He left Estonia aged 18 and travelled to Scandinavia, Germany and France, working in Paris from 1932 within a primarily Russian-Jewish group that included Marc Chagall (who became his friend and mentor), Chaim Soutine, and Moïse Kisling. He exhibited widely in France and the UK, and also travelled to the Congo, via Belgium, to work.
