Lot 170 - After Sandro Botticelli (c.1445 - 1510)...

After Sandro Botticelli (c.1445 - 1510) Italian (Florentine) 'The Return of Judith to Bethulia' a finely painted 19th century gouache response to the Renaissance work in oil, the scene depicting a moment in the Biblical tale of Judith, having just slain Holofernes, the Assyrian king's commander-in-chief for threatening the Hebrews of Bethulia, she walks defiantly, holding a bloody sabre in one hand, another a olive branch (symbolising peace and reconciliation for the people of Bethulia), accompanied by her maid Abra, who carries the severed head of the foe in a basket upon hers, gouache on paper, signed in L. Fachinetti Padre, on a simple paper mount (unframed) 27.5 x 20 cm.
