Attributed to Constance Markievicz (née Gore-Booth) (1868-1927) Irish a group of seven pencil or graphite sketched portraits or self-portraits on four pages, two double-sided, showing the characterful heads and shoulders of elegant ladies of the early 20th century, paper roughly 59cm high, 41cm wide (4) Constance Markievicz was an Irish politician, revolutionary, nationalist, Socialist, and Suffragette. She is best known for taking part in the Easter Rising of 1916, and for being a founder member of Fianna Éireann and the Irish Citizen Army. In 1918, she was the first woman elected to the UK House of Commons and the first woman in the world to hold a cabinet role, as Minister for Labour from 1919-22. She was also a talented and accomplished artist from a young age, and studied at the Slade from 1892. She painted and drew throughout her life and took part in many exhibitions, a number with the Leinster Gallery. These drawings, and the next lot, were acquired in an auction of the contents of her family home, Lissadel House, County Sligo.
