Lot 5

Lot 5 - A rare late 1960s British 4's Company Ltd...

A rare late 1960s British 4's Company Ltd 'Contour Chair' designed by David Colwell in 1968, the skeleton-moulded acrylic sheet shell clipped onto an angled bent and welded steel rod trapezoidal and square frame finished in black, 60.2cm high, 77.3cm wide, 73cm deep. Although typical of the exploration of the use of plastics for furniture during the 1960s, the Contour is rare as only comparatively few examples were made. The seat was made by heating an acrylic panel in an air oven before a pneumatic ram with a small rectangular plate is pressed into it, leaving the indentation. As the piece was not moulded, the original surface of the acrylic remained and did not require further finishing. Unlike other plastic chairs, the edge is flat and does not curve to grip the frame. Another example of this design, but on a chrome stand, is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
