Nikolai Ludwigovich Ellert (1845 - 1901), The Personification of Wind, signed and dated 1873, pencil and red watercolour, framed and glazed, 43 x 41 cm

The famous composer Tchaikovsky created in Moscow (supervisor Nicolas Rubinstein) Symphony no. 2 Little Russia on January 26th, 1873, based on Ukrainian folk tales. Ellert was stage draftsman in charge of decorations of the Imperial Opera in Moscow and likely produced this preparatory watercolour for this occasion.

Condition Report

Overall discolouring of the paper. Signs of a 4cm long tear to the top right corner, small tear halfway down right and left sides, paper stain on the left side. Slight creasing throughout, especially across the top. Has been previously removed from the frame.
