Leigh Hunt (1784-1859) English, a pen and watercolour sketch on paper of a brig in heavy weather, signed to lower right corner, 10 cm x 11.5 cm in an ebonised frame.

Believed to have been drawn by Hunt in 1821 when he and his family sailed from England to Italy, a journey that ended up taking seven months following 'storm, sickness and misadventure', his own description of it is found in his auobiography (Vol. 11, Chapter XVII 'Journey to Italy'). Leigh Hunt was a critic, essayist, poet and writer, born to American parents. He had connections to the family of Jane Austen, was friends and contemporaries of Keats, Byron and Shelley, and was the inspiration of the character of Harold Skimpole in Charles Dickens' Bleak House'.
