A fine quality early 19th century rosewood and brass bound domestic medicine chest of winged-front form, opening to reveal a drop-down rosewood shelf housing three drawers, the main body of the doors and cabinet containing twenty one glass bottles, many bearing paper labels for 'F B Sykes, Chemist & Druggist, 14 Upper Parliament Street, Liverpool', with a shallow drawer to the top containing brass scales and weights, four metal boxes and a glass slide, the lower drawers consisting of two slide-covered compartments, and one containing a glass pestle and mortar and three further medicine jars (with contents), the whole 28 cm high x 28.5 cm wide x 19 cm deep. A similar chest is illustrated on the frontispiece of 'New Medical Compendium', by D. Cox, Gloucester, 1808.
