Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) British depicting the full length portrait of a greyhound dog proudly sat on an Italian Rococo carved armchair, wearing a red collar with blue waved border, possibly from the Wateroloo cup racing event, signed and dated lower right 'E. Landseer 1867', oil on canvas, within a moulded gilt gesso frame, 34 cm x 28 cm. Fond of drawing animals from a young age, Landseer entered the Royal Academy school at fourteen, where he developed his skills as an artist, studying the detailed anatomy of animals. His fame rose so quickly that even Queen Victoria was an admirer of his works, and commissioned him to paint her dogs. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1815 until his death, and was knighted in 1850. Some of his most famous dog paintings such as 'Dignity and impudence', 'Highland Dogs' and 'A Distinguished Member of the Humane Society' reside today in the Tate museum's private collections. Provenance: Gifted to the vendor's grandfather by a good friend, to celebrate the birth of his son (the vendor's father).
