Dawsons Auctioneers are delighted to be selling selected contents from the estate of the late Della Howard.

 Della Howard

Della Howard was well known on the London social scene, particularly in the art world for over half a century. A regularly attendee of the major art fairs, auction houses and museums, Della was constantly painting a busy schedule and proud to be the last to leave at many parties, even well into her nineties.

This sale provides buyers at Dawsons an opportunity to own something from her collection, all of which was beautifully curated within her treasure trove of a house in Brompton Square Knightsbridge.

Della was a member, patron and benefactor of many of the UK’s leading museums such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Wallace Collection, Sir John Soane Museum, Museum of the Home as well as the Georgian Group, Irish Georgian Group, Furniture History Society, and perhaps her biggest passion was her place of worship the Brompton Oratory.

A highlight of this sale is the 16th century carved and polychromed figure of saint which formerly graced the fireplace of her sumptuous gothic mural painted dining room. Lot 32 estimate £800-£1200 was also purchased by Della from the estate sale of her cousin the famous contemporary artist Howard Hodgkin.

 Lot 32, a 16th century late Baroque figure of a saint. Estimate: £800 - £1200

Another lot of interest is the large Middle Eastern brass and coloured-glass Mosque lamp which hung in her majestic Moroccan themed kasbah. Della was a formidable hostess who entertained with ambassadorial standards and with an estimate of just £200-£300, lot 37 is a wonderful statement object that would look wonderful equally within an interior or as a garden feature.
