Rare Painting Discovered in a London House Sells for £255,000 at Dawsons

A life-changing result for our client

20/05/2022

Consigned via Dawsons' London, Hampstead office, our recent Fine Art & Antiques sale was lit up by a truly magnificent find! Siobhan Tyrrell - Dawsons Head of Valuations, London (and also one of the experts on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow) explains further…

“I discovered this painting on a valuation in a North London bungalow. The 90-year-old owner had left Italy in her youth, and when her father died, she inherited the painting. It had been in her ownership for over 30 years.

Most of the contents of the house were of relatively low value, so when I went into her bedroom I was utterly shocked when I saw this early religious painting hanging above her bed. It literally glowed with quality! I'm not a painting specialist, however as a General Valuer with over 25 years experience, I recognised that it was an exceptional work from the 16th century. I immediately told the family of its potential high worth, and they were keen for me to take it to be consigned to our Fine Art sale.”

Fantastic sale result and one happy customer!

As Auctioneers, we are privileged to be given the opportunity to help our clients to sell their items, and our aim is always to achieve the best possible price for them. Here at Dawsons we utilise our own in-house bespoke international marketing to reach a huge global audience of potential buyers, which means increased numbers of bidders and ensures that we achieve the best possible price for our client.

In the case of this important painting, the result was fantastic and the team here at Dawsons were delighted with a wholly satisfying outcome for more reasons than at first meet the eye. The vendor is suffering from dementia and her family have been keen to provide improved care and accommodation to make her life more comfortable, but increased costs had made this impossible... until now.

As a direct result of the incredible sale price achieved for our vendor, she will not have to worry about her ongoing and costly nursing care – much to the relief of her family. Fittingly, given the subject matter of the painting itself, this wonderful picture has really turned out to be a godsend to them all.

Our team of experts at Dawsons are always happy to provide a free verbal appraisal and auction valuation; regularly consigning many wonderful items to our monthly Fine Art, Antiques & Asian Art sale.

We can also provide insurance valuations, where required.

Please do get in touch, should you any Fine Art, Antiques, or Asian Art that you are keen to have valued.
