A George V governmental issue despatch box, the embossed leather/cloth stamped with the gilt royal cipher 'GVR' and grown above 'Sir Clarendon Hyde'. The interior stamped 'Wickwar & Co.,11 York St, SW'. with removable tray and fitted compartments and single brass carrying handle to the right of the box. Together with a printed biography of the original owner. 46cm x 30.5cm x 15cm.
Sir Clarendon Hyde (1858 – 1934) was a British businessman and Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1906 to 1910. He studied at the Royal Institution School (Liverpool), King's College London and called to the bar at the Middle Temple. In 1906 he was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Wednesbury in Staffordshire and knighted in 1910. He served on various government committees, mainly related to industrial and construction policy including the Board of Trade's Court of Arbitration, Lace Makers Trade Board, Taxi Cab inquiry and Cannock Chase Miner's Minimum Wage Board.
