Lot 139

A scarce assembled set of sixteen documented, beech, elm and ash Windsor armchairs in an unusual Buckinghamshire "Gothic Lace" back variant,1840-1860, each with arched ash stay rail rails above gothic lace splats, fitted with disproportionately small arms over solid saddled seats on slender turned supports with "H" stretchers. Some chairs are marked TN (Thomas Neal of Wycombe?) to the rear of the solid seats, The chairs are probably of the same Alm House consignment but by other contemporary associated Wycombe makers.

For an identical chair listed in the seminal work by Dr Bernard "Bill" Cotton, "The English Regional Chair", page 68. The entry states that these chairs were made in Buckinghamshire (Thames Valley) for an Alms House in Birmingham, between 1840-1860.

For other but unattributed examples of this series of this unusual variant please see the Stair Galleries sale.
