These medals were struck for NASA by the L. G. Balfour Company of Massachusetts and were originally available for NASA and space industry employees who worked on the missions. In 1973, the International Numismatic Agency were appointed exclusive distributors to the public for the set of thirteen medals. They are more commonly found in silver and pewter, but other examples are known to be marked 10K.
