A rare, impressive and large Mdina Glass 'Sculpture'
designed, made and signed c1970 by Michael Harris (1933-1994), the ovoid form with mottled, streaked and striated internal trails in blue, purple, and green tones with silver chloride and cased in colourless glass, the base signed by Michael Harris in diamond point 'Michael Harris Mdina Glass Malta'.
'Sculptures' of this large size were produced by Michael Harris to demonstrate the drama and spectacle of glassmaking, which would have been fresh to the eyes of the public during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Harris would gather glass from the furnace, apply colours and silver chloride, case it in colourless glass and reheat it, and then trail the large molten gather onto the marver table to create a unique sculptural artwork in glass. As Sculptures made by Harris were large, expensive and heavy, few were made and sold making them extremely rare today. This even rarer fully signed example was acquired by the vendor's mother during the 1980s.
