He left Poland at the age of 27 to live and work in Belgium fleeing there for France due to the German invasion of Belgium and then sought refuge in Glasgow in Great Britain and then moved to London where he held his first exhibition alongside fellow artist L.S. Lowry.
Herman often painted working people and peasants and was inspired by observing Welsh working folk during his time working in Ystradgynlais, Powys, Wales.
