Dawsons Discovery

Lot 79

Morrissey / The Smiths: A folder containing a large and interesting quantity of ephemera relating to Morrissey's solo career, to include many faxes sent and received in the planning of his 1995/6 US Tour, together with requests for live shows in the UK, extensive correspondence between Mike Hinc and Morrissey, some original photographs taken from beside live concert stages of Morrissey performing (e.g. at GMEX in Manchester), a copy of his 2002 Tour rider, and copies of music magzines.

The exchanges between Mike Hinc and Morrissey are typically humorous, with the latter often using pseudonyms to sign off, such as 'Mustard', 'MM', 'Moz the Pupil', 'Mr Muddle' etc. These are largely on fax, with Morrissey's bearing the printed name of 'Elizabeth Dwyer' (his mother). In one letter from Mike Hinc, he writes 'Is your chain being rattled? Do advise!! This tour is working well despite BDG - and I'd like to see it continue to do so. It is re-establishing your position as an icon, as a major musician of the late 20th century, which is what we wanted it to do'. In a separate reply to a letter, Morrissey replies 'As for this wild idea about me doing an album in 2001 (you've been at the cooking sherry again, haven't you?); well, nothing would make me happier, but realistically, it must be a sensible bite of the cherry, otherwise there really is no point. I don't want to end up like Mott the Hoople'.

From the personal collection of the late Mike Hinc, former booking agent for Morrissey, The Smiths and others. The lot forms part of an extensive archive of related items in this sale, consigned by the family of Mike Hinc.
