The team at Dawsons are excited to announce the upcoming sale of an exceptional piece of English Sporting history: an unsigned oil on canvas painting, depicting a cricket match at The Oval in Kennington. This rare and historically significant artwork, measuring 49 cm x 59 cm, is beautifully presented in a gilt frame and will be available for auction within our April Fine Art & Antiques sale on Thursday 27th April.
English School ( late 19th century), a cricket match at The Oval
The Oval, now the esteemed home of Surrey Cricket Club, was established around 1846 after the Montpelier Cricket Club (formed in 1796) was expelled from its original grounds in Walworth. The site had previously been a market garden, and the buildings of the garden are prominently featured in the painting, serving as a pavilion during the cricket match. The tower of St. Matthew's Church, Brixton, which still survives today, is also depicted to the left of the scene, adding further historical context to the work.
This captivating painting from the English School captures the essence of Victorian-era cricket and offers an extremely rare glimpse into the early days of The Oval, which has since become one of the most iconic cricket grounds in the world. The artwork provides a unique opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts of both art and cricket history to acquire a singular piece that embodies the spirit of the game and the cultural landscape of the time.
