Lot 275

Omar Ramsden - An Arts & Crafts gem-set silver plaque, London 1932, of rectangular form, the panel embossed with a central crucifix above a chalice, flanked by two angels, with one swinging a thurible, border decorated with amethyst and dyed chalcedony sugarloaf, signed ‘Omar Ramsden Me Fecit’, 34.0cm x 26.5cm, 965.0 grams (31.02 ozt).

Omar Ramsden is widely regarded as one of the leading silversmiths of the Arts and Crafts movement. Reacting against the rise of mass production, this movement championed craftsmanship, honesty in materials, and the beauty of hand-made objects. A committed Roman Catholic, Ramsden brought these values to many important ecclesiastical commissions, creating works of both artistic and spiritual significance. Examples of his craftsmanship can be found in notable churches and cathedrals, including Westminster Abbey and Bath Abbey, reflecting the enduring importance of his contribution to British religious art and design. More broadly, his work helped shape modern attitudes towards craftsmanship and design, demonstrating that beauty, skill, and integrity in making could stand in contrast to industrial mass production.
