A 19th-century French snuff box, circa 1820, of rectangular pocket-fitting form with rounded corners and convex sides, the cover and base with rectangular panels of engine-turning with basketwork pattern, sides and ends chased with jardinière vases amidst scrolled foliage on a sablé ground within polished borders, raised thumbpiece engraved with similar foliate motifs, struck with Paris office third standard guarantee hallmarks for gold (1819-1838), maker's mark rubbed off, possibly by Simon-Achille Léger or Louis-François Tronquoy, overall dimensions 9.3 x 5.6 x 2.0 cm, total weight of item 104.3 grams.
