Dawsons Discovery

Lot 100

The Beatles: signatures in pen of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison & Ringo Starr, as well as "THE BEATLES" to the left-hand side, added to a typical autograph book page, 10 cm x 13.5 cm.

The vendor comments: "The autographs were signed in front of my father, Stan Hibbert, who played trumpet with the NDO [the BBC Northern Dance Orchestra], who were the resident musicians and were on stage with the Beatles when I believe they did their first live recording for the BBC. He asked for their autograph on my behalf, and I remember him telling me they were quite bemused at being asked by a professional musician, as the NDO were quite high profile at the time!"

The Beatles made their only appearance on the BBC radio show "The Beat Show" on 3rd July 1963, at Manchester's Playhouse Theatre. The broadcast featured live performances of "From Me To You", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Twist And Shout", backed by the NDO, and was directed by Bernard Herrmann.

Provenance

The vendor comments: "The autographs were signed in front of my father, Stan Hibbert, who played trumpet with the NDO [the BBC Northern Dance Orchestra], who were the resident musicians and were on stage with the Beatles when I believe they did their first live recording for the BBC. He asked for their autograph on my behalf, and I remember him telling me they were quite bemused at being asked by a professional musician, as the NDO were quite high profile at the time!"

The autographs are on a slip of paper, and Sellotape was placed over the whole page to stick it to the autograph book sheet. This has discoloured over the years, with the paper now being loose.
