Oliffe Richmond (1919-1977) Australian 'Mirror Figure', cast and patinated abstract figural bronze sculpture, signed in the base 'OR 1967', together with an exhibition catalogue for a travelling solo retrospective exhibition in Australia, published by the Australian Gallery Directors Council, 1980, featuring the bronze on page 16. Sculpture 26cm high, integral base 12.5cm wide, 24cm long. (2) Richmond studied in Hobart and Sydney, and his work is informed by his observations of the stresses and tensions the human body is placed under during ballet classes and wrestling matches. In 1948, he moved to England where he assisted Henry Moore, and was also a lecturer at the Chelsea School of Art. His work is considered in the same vein as that by Kenneth Armitage, Reginald Butler, Elizabeth Frink, Bernard Meadows, and Robert Clatworthy. Examples of his work can be found in the Tate and other public collections.
