To be sold to raise funds for The Atlantic Peace Foundation

Dawsons is delighted to be offering a collection of artworks to raise funds for The Atlantic Peace Foundation, the charity established by Bertrand Russell during his lifetime, for the study and research into sources of conflict, preparation for war, and problems of armament and disarmament. There is a fascinating and eclectic mix of paintings, prints and sculptures by artists from all over the world and funds raised will go towards renovating Bertrand Russell’s house in Cornwall, Carn Voel , which will become an international research centre and small museum.

Tony Simpson from the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation commented  "David Hockney, in common with many other artists around the world, responded generously to Edith Russell’s appeal for donations of artworks to mark Bertrand Russell’s centenary in 1972. ‘I was a great admirer of your late husband and his work,’ wrote Hockney, ‘and would be pleased to donate a print or drawing’. He sent an etching entitled Vase and Flowers, which was sold at Woburn Abbey in May 1972. Hockney’s handwritten letter is included in the current sale (lot 192).

The Atlantic Peace Foundation is an educational charity established by the Russells in the 1960s. Currently, it is establishing an international research centre and library at Bertrand Russell’s old home in Cornwall. An extensive programme of renovations is under way, and funds raised at auction will support this ongoing work."
