Dawsons Discovery

The Beatles: an autographed page, bearing the signatures of John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, August 1963, with an accompanying letter from the person who obtained them (the elder brother of the vendor).

Both are on headed letter paper for the address he was staying at at the time, (in Cheshire), the letter dated 27/8/63, and reading "Dear Deirdre, I enclose the Beatles' autographs: one set is on the back of their photograph and the other one, the 'George Special', is on the battered piece of paper. I have also enclosed two of George's fan letters which I think are extremely amusing. Tony Sutane, a friend of mine and the Beatles, is firmly established in Manchester: he signed between 20 and 40 autographs and was mobbed to such an extent that a gang of girls fought to rip off his jacket buttons and his tie. In case you didn't know, the girls of Manchester do, his first record, 'Swinging Baby' is being issued by Decca next month! Be sure to ask for it at your local record store, and, of course, buy it!!. I went down town twice in the 'Beatlemobile' (George has a Jag), had coffee with them, watched them being filmed, and left, via a mob of screaming girls, with them. They all wear tight, tight trousers, high heeled Chelsea boots (up to their ankles) and seem to like black corduroy. Ringo, incidentally, is so-called because of his love of jewelry [sic]; he wears 4 huge rings, a gold watch and two gold bracelets. See you in September, Love Terry. PS. Sorry about the writing and spelling but I am in a frantic hurry."

The signed page is headed (possibly in George's hand), 'To Deirdre, love from the BEATLES'.

The two 'fan letters' to George Harrison mentioned above, are present here, together with the envelope all were originally sent in to our vendor. NB: The Beatles signed photograph mentioned in the letter, is not here.

The vendor's brother was staying with a family friend (a senior member of staff at BBC Manchester), in Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire at the time, hence the headed paper, and it was this connection that enabled him to spend some time with the band. The Beatles filmed several shows in Manchester in August 1963, both live and for television. The vendor reports 'My brother spent 4-5 hours with them at BBC Manchester and obtained the autographs personally. He chatted with all four of them. George Harrison was exceptionally nice and gave him a couple of fan letters to pass on to me.'

The 'Tony Sutane' mentioned in the letter was a pseudonym made up by the vendor's brother, as a joke with his sister as to why he had managed to spend time with the band in their car, and go through the 'mob of screaming girls'.with them.
