Drolling became a pupil of Jacques Louis David, who influenced his style and method, and lead him to win the Prix de Rome in 1810 for his Death of Achilles. He then went on to exhibit at Salons and was given many important commissions, including one for the Palace of Versailles and the musee du Louvre.
