Captain America (1985) Original Production Script, one of only a few produced for an early version of the film which faced continuous obstacles and was never made.
Screenplay written by Michael Winner and Stan Hey, based on the characters in Marvel Comics, The Cannon Group Inc., dated December 3, 1985, unbound loose sheets and purple card covers,125-pages on white sheets, contained in a blue Space Shuttle, Kennedy Space Centre, Florida ring binder file, 25 x 29.5cm.
In 1979, film tycoons, Menaham Golam and Yoram Globus, purchased the financially struggling Cannon Films. The cousins struck a five-year deal with Marvel Comics and paid $225,000 for the rights to Spider-Man and Captain America.
The studio, being impressed with the Death Wish director, drafted in Michael Winner to direct a script by James Silke, but in 1986 Winner scrapped the Silke script and worked on the script himself with British television writer Stan Hey (Auf Wiedersehen Pet). Michael Winner worked alongside Stan Lee and Lawrence Block, but by 1987 Winner was off the project, Golan-Globus split up, actor-director John Stockwell (who had replaced Winner) was himself replaced and according to the final director, Albert Pyun, the film was shelved for two years because ‘it wasn’t the movie the studio wanted, and the producing studio was undergoing financial issues’.
Provenance:
The Collection of the late Malcolm Christopher (1932-2021) who worked with Michael Winner during early production of the film. Malcolm worked in the film and television industry as location manager, production manager, production supervisor, associate producer and line producer, his credits include, The Saint (1962-1969), The Persuaders (1971-1972), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), Barry Lyndon (1975), Rollerball (1975), Voyage of the Damned (1976), Raise the Titanic (1980), Never Say Never Again (1983), Death Wish 3 (1985), Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) and many others.
