Absolute Beginners (1986) Original Production Script –
Absolute Beginners, Shooting Script, A Julien Temple Film by Richard Burridge, Christopher Wicking and Don McPherson. Additional Dialogue by Terry Johnson, Palace (Absolute Beginners) Limited, 24th May 1985, ownership name, ‘Mary’, in black ink and numbered ‘16’ top of title-page, unbound, approx. 122-pages on white indexed sheets with pink and green revision sheets, extensively annotated throughout in pencil and coloured ink by Script Supervisor, Mary Holdsworth, 23 x 30cm;
together with, a four-page Cast list on pink sheets; and a copy of a Signed reference for Mary Holdsworth written by British film Producer, Stephen Woolley, single-page on headed ‘Palace’ paper, 13th February 1987, . . . ‘She is deservedly one of the most experienced and sought after script supervisors in the country . . . this is proven by her work with some of our most established directors such as Nicolas Roeg, Michael Apted, Neil Jordan and Julien Temple’; a second copy reference for Mary Holdsworth written by Production Manager, Selwyn Roberts, a single-page on HandMade Films, Shepperton Studios, headed paper, 1987; and a copy of Mary’s CV including productions she had worked on from 1968 until 1987; all within a pink card folder, with ‘Absolute Beginners’ written in Mary’s hand, 25 x 35.5cm overall.
The film, directed by Julien Temple, stars David Bowie, Patsie Kensit, James Fox, and Mandy Rice-Davies. Julien Temple asked David Bowie to write music for the film, and after reading the book and then the script, Bowie agreed to Temple’s offer, and asked if he could also play the part of Vendice Partners. Although the film was not a commercial success and often blamed for the collapse of Goldcrest films, Bowie’s song was a success and reached No. 2 on the UK singles chart.

Mary Holdsworth worked on numerous films and television series including, P’tang, Yang, Kipperbang (1982) Gorky Park (1983), The Company of Wolves (1984), Absolute Beginners (1986), Gorillas in the Mist (1988), Batman (1989) and many others.
