Van Cleef & Arpels was founded in Paris in 1906 and has built its reputation on extraordinary craftsmanship, striking motifs and an ability to make fine jewellery feel both opulent and wearable. The Alhambra collection, introduced in 1968, has become one of the house’s defining signatures. Its motif draws on the shape of a four-leaf clover, a long-standing emblem of luck for the firm, which has appeared in their design catalogues since 1906. It also echoes the Moorish quatrefoil associated with the Alhambra palace in Granada. When first launched, the original design was a long necklace with twenty clover-shaped motifs edged with delicate gold beading, and this clean, proportional shape remains instantly recognisable today through its many luxurious incarnations, featuring materials ranging from coral, malachite, and diamonds to wood, onyx, and mother of pearl.

Part of the necklace’s sustained popularity stems from its versatility. Launched at the end of the 1960s, a decade that signalled greater social and sartorial freedoms, it is elegant enough for evening wear, yet simple enough to be worn during the day with casual dress. This helped make Alhambra a celebrity favourite almost from the beginning, when Princess Grace of Monaco was famously photographed layering multiple Alhambra necklaces, cementing the design as an emblem of refined glamour. Today, oft-photographed public figures such as Catherine, Princess of Wales, Reese Witherspoon, and Cardi B have kept it freshly in view for new generations. Unlike trend-led jewellery that quickly rises and falls out of fashion, Alhambra necklaces remain relevant and highly desirable.

That is exactly why the pre-loved market is so strong. Buyers want access to an iconic jewellery house at a lower entry point than current boutique pricing, while collectors are drawn to limited editions and rarer materials. In recent years, retail price increases have also pushed more shoppers toward authenticated second-hand examples. A pre-loved Alhambra necklace can therefore appeal to several audiences at once: first-time luxury buyers, experienced collectors, and people looking for a piece that will hold value better than most fashion jewellery. Original box and papers, excellent condition, desirable gemstones and a trustworthy provenance all tend to bolster resale prices.

As for worth, values vary widely by model, material and age. On today’s market, a pre-loved Vintage Alhambra pendant necklace often appears in the low-to-mid thousands, while more substantial Vintage Alhambra multi-motif necklaces can sit around the upper four figures and beyond. Rarer stones, limited editions, and vintage examples can exceed estimates by a significant margin.
