Cartier, established in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier in Paris, has grown to become one of the world's most prestigious luxury brands. From its humble beginnings in a small workshop to being called the 'jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers' by Edward VII, the brand is revered for its innovative designs which have an enduring allure.
Cartier's jewellery and watch portfolio boasts numerous iconic pieces that have become symbols of luxury and sophistication. The Tank watch inspired by the tanks of WW1 is a timeless classic. The much-imitated "Love" bracelet and ring, designed by Aldo Cipullo in 1969, symbolises eternal love and commitment; the Trinity ring with its three bands of coloured gold and the iconic “Panthère" collection all epitomise Cartier's blend of artistic elegance and exquisite craftsmanship.

The brand's success can be attributed to several factors. Cartier's commitment to quality is exceptional. Skilled artisans meticulously design and create each piece, ensuring beauty and durability. Whilst, Cartier is also known for pushing boundaries, such as being the first jeweller to use platinum in its designs. When launched in the 1920s, the Tutti Frutti range or 'pierres de couleur' was ground-breaking for the striking sapphires, emeralds and rubies set together as flowers and rubies and because the gemstones themselves were not of superlative quality. Still, the effect of the whole was breath-taking.
The pieces have graced some of the most renowned personalities in history. Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco, often adorned herself with Cartier jewellery. Elizabeth Taylor's love for Cartier was legendary; she possessed several exquisite pieces, including a ruby and diamond suite, and the famous "Taylor-Burton" diamond. Wallace Simpson, doyenne of taste and style, famously wore a Cartier engagement ring from the Prince of Wales and a Cartier cross bracelet for her wedding. Today, stars such as Angelina Jolie, Rihanna, and the Princess of Wales have been spotted wearing Cartier, further cementing its position in modern popular culture. These much-admired and photographed clients have solidified Cartier's status as one of the world's most desirable brands.

The collectors' market for pre-loved Cartier pieces is thriving, driven by the brand's history and enduring appeal. An exhibition at the V&A showcasing over 350 pieces of Cartier's work recently opened (April 2025) to rapturous reception, further heightening brand awareness and the desirability of its pieces.
